Iberia Express (I2, Madrid Barajas) will establish a second base outside of its current Madrid Barajas main hub during the course of 2015. Airline CEO and president, Fernando Candela, told Spain's Expansion magazine that the base, in all likelihood, will be in either the Balearic or the Canary Islands though its exact position will only be decided once an intensive study has been undertaken.

As part of growth plans, the carrier is looking to strengthen its presence in the Spanish domestic market as well as in France, Germany, and Scandinavia. New flights to the United Kingdom are also being studied. Candela revealed that Iberia is currently considering Iberia Express' entry into the Madrid to Barcelona El Prat market which has come under severe threat from the country's AVE high speed rail network.

The International Airlines Group (IAG) set up Iberia Express in 2012 to operate short- and medium-haul routes from IAG's Madrid Barajas hub and to provide transfer feed onto Iberia's longhaul network. Currently, the LCC operates seventeen A320-200s.
