Hazar Avia (Ashgabat) will be re-equipped with modern aircraft as part of the government's drive to improve the country's overall safety profile. Currently, the carrier operates a fleet of ageing An-24 turboprops on charter flights throughout Turkmenistan while Turkmenistan Airlines serves Turkmenabat, Turkmenbashi, Mary, and Dashogus using Boeing machinery.

In addition to fleet modernization, Central Asian Aero News says Turkmen strongman Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow has mandated his government to upgrade Kerki airport in Atamyrat, Lebap Region, and Garabogaz in the Balkan Region be upgraded to international ICAO standards.

Currently, the former Soviet republic's only major international gateway is via the capital, Ashgabat, where national carrier Turkmenistan Airlines (T5, Ashgabat) has its main operational hub.
