Eurowings (EW, Düsseldorf) has begun to outline its preliminary Vienna base network which is set to come on-line during Summer 2016. The Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt International) budget subsidiary is currently in the process of securing of its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT).

According to research carried out by Austrian Aviation Net, Eurowings is planning to serve Hannover as well as Rome Fiumicino, London Stansted, Barcelona El Prat, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia Manises, Bastia, and Faro from its Vienna base.

Such routings would put Eurowings primarily into direct competition with Niki (Austria) (Vienna), the Austrian subsidiary of Lufthansa rival, Air Berlin (1991) (Berlin Tegel), and other budget carriers such as Vueling Airlines (VY, Barcelona El Prat) and easyJet (London Luton) to a lesser extent.

As part of its plan to develop Eurowings into a regional European LCC, Lufthansa is also considering establishing bases in Austria, Switzerland, and Belgium with Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg, CH, Geneva, Graz, and Brussels National all touted as potential candidates.
