ZagrosJet (Erbil), Germania (Berlin Schönefeld), and Iraqi Airways (IA, Baghdad) have been forced to suspend, with immediate effect, flights from northern Iraq to Sweden following a directive from the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen).

Last week, Iraqi authorities briefly closed the country's northern skies after Russian Navy ships based in the Caspian Sea began launching missiles against Islamic State targets in Syria.

In a statement issued last week, Transportstyrelsen said the increased military activity across northern Iraq posed a threat to civilian flights thus warranting a ban.

Of the cities, Iraqi Airways and Germania had connected Sulaymaniyah with Malmö and Stockholm Arlanda respectively while ZagrosJet and Germania had both connected Erbil with Stockholm Arlanda.
