Baia Mare International Airport in northwest Romania has closed to commercial traffic as of December 22 following the commencement of pavement upgrade works.

The airfield's operator, Maramureş County Council, said in a statement that extending and renovating runway 10/28 as well as associated taxiways and aprons would enable Baia Mare to handle medium-sized freighters.

No tentative date for the airport's reopening was given.

Until its closure, Baia Mare's sole commercial flight was a daily return service to Bucharest Henri Coanda operated by TAROM (RO, Bucharest Henri Coanda).
