Nottingham East Midlands Airport will partially close to all traffic on weekends between November 5 and December 19 to allow for runway upgrade works.

In a statement, the airfield said the refurbishment would be carried out over seven consecutive weekends with the closures to begin at 20h00L each Saturday and end at 20h00L each Monday, except for the closure on the final weekend, which will end at 13h00L.

"After an in-depth consultation with our airlines and cargo operators, we came to the decision that completing the project in this way was the best way to avoid major disruption in the lead-up to Christmas," Andy Cliffe, managing director East Midlands Airport, said in a press release. "The timing for us is crucial and we had to look to do this in the winter season, when we naturally aren't as busy."

During the works, approximately 50,000 tonnes of material will be laid on the 2,900metre-long runway while 1,200 lights will be replaced with LEDs.
