The southern Chilean town of Villa O'Higgins has been left without scheduled passenger services after Aerocord (Puerto Montt International) operated its last flight - to Coyhayque - on September 30.

According to the Diario de Aysen newspaper, the town signed a new contract with a new firm, Wings of Patagonia (Puerto Montt International), in July to continue the subsidized service with effect from October 18.

However, a few days prior to the launch of flights, the airline contacted the town's officials to state that they could no longer offer services given difficulties in setting up shop in Villa O'Higgins.

A new tender has since been held with two prospective operators having submitted bids. However, municipal officials indicate neither has yet committed to the route.
