Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) says it has suspended flights to Tirgu Mures, Romania until January 8, 2017 owing to concerns about the state of the Transylvanian airfield's 2,100metre-long runway 07/25.
The Hungarian LCC switched service to Cluj-Napoca on November 18 and had planned to resume using Tirgu Mures earlier this month. Airport management has used Wizz Air's protracted suspension of flights to pressure the Tirgu Mures municipality to avail funding for the much-needed upgrade works.
Prior to its withdrawal, Wizz Air connected Tirgu Mures with Budapest, Dortmund, Frankfurt Hahn, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, London Luton, Madrid Barajas, Memmingen, Paris Beauvais, and Rome Ciampino.
