ITA Airways (AZ, Rome Fiumicino) has “enriched” its growing range of intercontinental routes with the relaunch of its predecessor Alitalia’s connection between Milan Malpensa to New York JFK on April 2, it said in a news release.

The route, which will initially operate 5x weekly, is ITA’s first long-haul route from Milan, and it adds to three other services to the United States that were launched in March - from Rome Fiumicino to New York JFK (14x weekly), Boston (5x weekly), and Miami International (4x weekly), the ch-aviation capacities module shows.

The new route will be operated with one of the carrier’s A330-200s, of which it has seven.

ITA Airways said it plans to “continue its expansion process in the US market, the most strategic market after Italy,” aiming to reach a total of 42 frequencies per week between Italy and the US by August 2022.

The rejuvenated and state-owned flag carrier currently operates a total of 55 routes, and its planned Summer 2022 schedule will ramp this up to 64 including 23 domestic, 34 European, and seven intercontinental. As it takes delivery of more Airbus widebodies - ten A330-900N and six A350-900s according to ch-aviation fleets - it will launch new destinations in the coming months from Rome to Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini, Los Angeles International, São Paulo Guarulhos, and Tokyo Haneda.

Between Milan and JFK, ITA Airways will join American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, and Neos Air, while La Compagnie and United Airlines both operate Milan-New York Newark. All fly daily except Neos (2x weekly) and La Compagnie (5x weekly).
