Wizz Air UK (W9, London Luton) has closed its Doncaster/Sheffield base on June 10, 2022, after failing to reach new commercial terms with the airport operator.
"It is with deep regret that we have had to take the difficult but responsible decision to cancel a large number of Wizz Air flights to/from Doncaster/Sheffield Airport from 10 June 2022. This decision is, unfortunately, a result of Doncaster/Sheffield Airport indicating that it is unable to guarantee the terms of its commercial agreement with Wizz Air," the carrier said.
The low-cost carrier added that the decision would allow it to improve its service at other British bases. The ch-aviation schedules module shows Wizz Air has now entirely exited the airport, dropping services to Alicante, Lanzarote, Larnaca, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Poznan Lawica, and Tenerife Sur. It has also abandoned plans to launch new routes to Dalaman and Faro. Hungarian sister carrier Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) continues to operate eight routes to Poland and Romania out of Doncaster/Sheffield.
"Unfortunately, it appears that DSA services have been sacrificed in order to support routes at other UK airports. Whilst the extraordinary circumstances currently faced by the industry are recognised, DSA has been a long-term supporter and sponsor of Wizz Air in the UK market, and for its part, has fulfilled in whole its obligations within the Commercial Agreement, including investing heavily in financial incentives, and terminal upgrade works in support of a multi-year deal signed only last year. It is regrettable that performance by Wizz of its own commitments has not been reciprocated," the airport operator said in a statement.
The only other airline with a base at the central English airport is TUI Airways (BY, London Luton). Only TUI Airways and Wizz Air operate scheduled passenger flights to the airport.
