Asiana Airlines (OZ, Seoul Incheon) has reactivated its only remaining B747-400 to operate its weekly services between Seoul Incheon and Changchun.
HL7428 (msn 28552) had remained active throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, albeit with very low utilisation, until May 2022, when it was flown to Taipei Taoyuan and stored there for two months. It was subsequently ferried back to South Korea on July 3, 2022, and started operating to Ho Chi Minh City. Starting in late August, the airline moved the B747 to its routes to Changchun and Nanjing. Since October 2, the aircraft has only been operating to the former, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows.
The ch-aviation fleets history module shows that Asiana Airlines' B747-400 fleet totalled just two aircraft. The other, HL7418 (msn 25780), was retired in 2019. However, the airline is a much more prodigious B747 freighter operator - its fleet currently comprises six B747-400(BDSF)s and four B747-400FSCDs. Its quadjet fleet also includes six A380-800s, of which just three are active.
Asiana Airlines' plans to offload its oldest aircraft, including the B747s, precede the pandemic, although the carrier did not provide a specific timeline for the phase-out of the last B747-400.
