Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt International) has confirmed it will return at least four A380-800s to service this year, which will be based in Munich.
According to a spokeswoman, destinations to be served by the A380s have not yet been finalised although media reports have pointed to New York JFK, Los Angeles International and Boston launching from June 2023.
In social media posts on February 3, the airline announced it had reactivated a second A380, D-AIMM (msn 175), which arrived at Frankfurt International from Teruel (Spain), barely a week after the first reactivated A380, D-AIMK (msn 146), was sent for C-check maintenance to Manila Ninoy Aquino International in the Philippines. The plan to base some of the A380s in Munich was already disclosed in June 2022 by Chief Executive Officer Carsten Spohr.
The spokeswoman said refresher training for flight crews was in process, "but I can’t confirm the exact timeline for this refresher training," she said.
The ch-aviation fleets module shows that Lufthansa still has fourteen A380s which have been in long-term "deep storage" in Spain. The other eight A380s will reportedly remain in storage at Teruel for now.
The spokeswoman confirmed that Lufthansa intends to also bring back ten of its seventeen A340-600s for the 2023 summer season.
The airline last year confirmed it was reactivating its A380 fleet from the summer of 2023 in response to a steep rise in customer demand and the delayed delivery of ordered aircraft.
