Wizz Air Malta (W4, Malta International) has wet-leased an A320-200 from GlobalX (G6, Miami International) to support its summertime operations from its Bucharest Henri Coanda base.
N278GX (msn 1954) was ferried from Miami International via Bangor International and Reykjavik Keflavik to Bucharest on June 13-14, 2023. It began operating for the Wizz Air Holdings carrier on June 21, 2023. GLOBALX Chief Executive and Chairman Ed Wegel said the commitment was for the "next few weeks".
"We are honoured to be flying one A320 aircraft in support of Wizz Air operating out of Bucharest to cities in Italy and Spain for the next few weeks. We are learning how to operate in European airspace, and also watching with awe and learning from Wizz as they turn our aircraft at the gate in 35 minutes. All great experience for us as we will be operating aircraft in Europe for many years to come," Wegel said.
The contract is GLOBALX's second in Europe this summer. The US ACMI/charter specialist will also start operating two A320-200s for TUI fly (Netherlands) (OR, Amsterdam Schiphol) under a three-year seasonal deal starting this month. In North America, the airline operates one A320-200 on behalf of virtual carrier Red Way out of Lincoln, NE, one A320-200 for Canada's Lynx Air (Calgary), and the remaining aircraft under its own 'G6' code on various charter contracts.
The ch-aviation fleets module shows that Wizz Air, Wizz Air Malta, Wizz Air UK, and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi collectively operate forty-six A320-200s, six A320-200Ns, forty-one A321-200s, and ninety A321-200NX.
