Air Malawi (Blantyre) is currently again up for sale by the government of Malawi after previous privatization attempts in 2003 and 2008 had failed to attract any successful bids. The government now plans to assume the carrier's debt ahead of the sale to make Air Malawi more attractive to potential investors. It has invited bidders to submit their offers by October and wants the airline to be owned by a consortium of Malawian nationals and a foreign airline in the future with the Malawian nationals maintaining 51% majority ownership. Air Malawi currently operates a single ATR 42-300 and uses a South African registered B737-200 under a wet-lease arrangement for its three times weekly service from Blantyre to Johannesburg O.R. Tambo. Besides the domestic route from Blantyre to Lilongwe, Air Malawi also serves Dar es Salaam, Harare International, Johannesburg and Lusaka.
