Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) has announced it will resume services to Chisinau International, the only commercial airport in Moldova, on December 14, 2023. The low-cost carrier paused its services to the country in March over safety concerns.
The airline will initially operate a limited network to Chisinau, comprising flights from London Luton (3x weekly), Rome Fiumicino, and Milan Malpensa (2x weekly each).
"The return of Wizz Air to Moldova is a result of our continued efforts to ensure new international connections for all our citizens and boost economic development," Prime Minister Dorin Recean said.
The LCC relocated its then-base from Chisinau to Iasi in Romania shortly after the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. As Ukraine's neighbour and given the sizeable Russian military presence in Moldova's breakaway region of Transnistria, the country has been perceived as being at risk of political instability. Despite the lack of any major security events in Moldova and the country's firm pro-European stance, Wizz Air permanently shuttered its Chisinau base in December 2022 and then ended all flights to the country three months later.
