The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has granted Avelo Airlines (XP, Burbank) authorisation to operate scheduled international passenger flights from the United States to destinations in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, as it requested last month.
The US carrier received exemption authority for two years for services:
- from Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio International to Mexico City (most likely México City Felipe Angeles due to México City International’s saturation levels), Toluca, and Acapulco, as well as to points in Panama and beyond;
- from New York, Washington, Baltimore International, Los Angeles International, and Houston to Mexico City, Toluca, and beyond in Central America.
No specific routes to the Dominican Republic were outlined in the DOT filing.
ch-aviation reached out to Avelo Airlines for comment on routes it could announce and possible launch dates. It responded: “We will share more information later this year as we finalise our plans.”
Avelo Airlines’ fleet currently comprises 16 aircraft - seven B737-700s and nine B737-800s - the ch-aviation fleets module shows, with which it connects around 35 destinations in the United States and Puerto Rico with scheduled routes. It also operates international charter services for Apple Vacations from Lansing, Michigan. However, it has also been the company’s plan to fly international scheduled services, and its recent filings and authorisation with the DOT “are a preliminary regulatory step towards potentially initiating service between the US and certain points in the Dominican Republic and Mexico.”
