The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) has opened an investigation into Delta Air Lines' handling of over 6,000 cancelled flights since Friday, July 19, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced on July 24.

The airline has struggled to resume normal service almost a week after a global IT outage at cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike created havoc across the commercial aviation industry and beyond. On July 22, Delta and its regional affiliates accounted for about two-thirds of all flight cancellations worldwide, CBS News reported.

In a statement to ABC News, the carrier said that CrowdStrike’s faulty Windows update had rendered its IT systems inoperable and that the company was working to restore its "reliable" on-time service.
