FedEx has exercised options to purchase eight B777-200Fs from Boeing and acquired an additional two used aircraft of the type for its in-house airline FedEx Express. The logistics integrator also ordered ten ATR72-600Fs from ATR - Avions de Transport Régional but will delay the retirement of its MD-11Fs as it awaits the delivery of factory-new aircraft.
A recent securities filing revealed that FedEx Express expects the delivery of three new B777-200Fs in 2026, while five remaining aircraft on order should arrive in its fleet in 2027. The airline said it purchased two used B777-200Fs in the third quarter of the 2025 fiscal year (December 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025). In total, it currently has eleven aircraft of the type on order.
Meanwhile, FedEx Express will receive the first ATR72-600F in 2027, with the final aircraft scheduled for delivery in 2029.
"We have several aircraft modernization programs underway that are supported by the purchase of Boeing 777 Freighter and Boeing 767-300 Freighter aircraft. These aircraft are significantly more fuel-efficient per unit than the aircraft types previously utilized, and these expenditures are necessary to achieve significant long-term operating savings and to replace older aircraft," the company said.
FedEx Express extended the retirement of its entire MD-11F fleet from 2028 to the end of 2032. It plans to retire five aircraft in fiscal year 2027, five in 2028, six in 2029, and seven in 2030. The airline remains the largest operator of the type, with 58 of the aircraft in its fleet.
Besides the MD-11 freighters, FedEx Express operates thirty-six A300-600Fs, twenty A300-600R(F)s, eighty-five B757-200(SF)s, ten MD-10-30(F)s, one MD-10-10(F), fifty-eight B777-200Fs, and 143 B767-300Fs, ch-aviation fleets data reveals.
FedEx Express also owns twenty-three ATR72-600Fs but places these aircraft in the fleets of partner airlines under CMI contract. Nine aircraft are operated by ASL Airlines Ireland, five by Gulf & Caribbean Cargo, four by Mountain Air Cargo, three by Swiftair, and two by Empire Airlines.
The cargo carrier has a total of seventeen outstanding orders for ATR72-600Fs, which includes ten from the new purchase agreement and seven from a previous one signed in November 2017.
