VietJetAir (VJ, Hanoi Noi Bai International) has added 20 additional A330-900Ns to an existing order with Airbus, doubling the number of the variant it has contracted for in line with its plans to increase its long-haul route network.
The agreement was signed in Hanoi on May 26 by VietJetAir chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao and Airbus president Wouter van Wersch, while French president Emmanual Macron, on a state visit to Viet Nam, looked on.
The order follows a previous contract for twenty A330neo the airline signed up for at the 2024 Farnborough Airshow. The ch-aviation Commercial Aviation Aircraft Data module shows that VietJet has 246 additional jets on order, namely seventy-six A321-200NX, twenty A321-200NY(XLR)s, fifty B737-8s, and 100 B737-8-200s.
As previously reported, fifty of the B737s will be transferred to subsidiary Thai VietJetAir to bolster its fleet of twelve A320-200s and six A321-200s.
The new widebodies, which will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, will eventually replace the carrier's existing seven A330-300s. The remainder of its fleet comprises seventeen A320-200s, thirty-six A321-200s, eleven A321-200Ns, twenty-five A321-200NX, and two wet-leased C909s.
VietJetAir currently serves 56 airports in 14 countries. The airline said in March 2025 it is also considering introducing new routes to Europe by the end of 2025 as well as exploring the possibility of flights to the United States.
