Iraqi Airways (IA, Baghdad) has launched twice weekly flights between Baghdad and Frankfurt International using its single B777-200(LR) YI-AQZ (c/n 1006) with plans to launch Düsseldorf, Berlin and Munich also in the pipeline. The route operates under the numbers IA231/IA232 and marks the Iraqi national carrier's third European destination following its Baghdad - Malmö - London Gatwick flights which were launched earlier this year. Previous attempts by Iraqi Airways to start international flights to Europe had been thwarted by a dispute with Kuwait Airways (KU, Kuwait) regarding compensation for aircraft lost during Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. The legal case, which was resolved in December 2012 in return for USD500million in compensation, made it difficult for the Iraqi national carrier to start flights to European destinations where it risked having its aircraft
