CityJet (WX, Dublin International) is to be merged with Austrian regional carrier InterSky (Friedrichshafen) according to Intro Aviation GmbH co-founder, Hans Rudolf Woehrl. "The aim is to create a new regional airline active across Europe that is big enough not to be pushed out by big carriers like Lufthansa," Woehrl told German weekly magazine, Wirtschaftswoche. The German turnaround specialists last month submitted a firm offer to Air France (AF, Paris CDG) for the purchase of both Cityjet and its Belgian subsidiary, VLM (1992) (Antwerp). Mr Woehrl said that the acquisition has not yet been formalized, but is imminent. Intro Aviation already owns a 74.9% stake in Intersky which serves destinations in Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain and Croatia using a fleet of three ATR72s, three Dash 8-300s and one E120. "In Europe, there are not just low-cost flights and business for big monopolists like Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt International), but there is also a market for regional connections for business travellers who are not in the big economic centres of Europe," Woehrl told Wirtschaftswoche.
