Proflight Zambia (P0, Lusaka) is faced with the prospect of increased, lop-sided competition, after the Zambian Transport Minister Yamfwa Mukanga said a renewed Zambia Airways (1964) (Lusaka) would likely focus on the local tourism sector. Since Zambia Airways' demise along with that of Zambian Airways (Lusaka), Aero Zambia (Lusaka) and Zambezi Airlines (Lusaka), Proflight has enjoyed a monopoly on local routes as well as some regional services. Speaking about the proposed new carrier, Minister Mukanga said the initiative has attracted offers from Europe, the U.S., Africa and the Middle East. Ethiopian Airlines (ET, Addis Ababa International) had at one stage been linked to talks with the Zambians, though since the advent of Malawi Airlines (3W, Lilongwe International), it is unlikely negotiations would have progressed beyond conjecture. Mukanga told Bloomberg newswire the new national carrier will "probably" fly locally and to neighbouring countries as well as "one or two" longer routes including London.
