Philippine Airlines (PR, Manila Ninoy Aquino International) has reportedly abandoned talks with ANA - All Nippon Airways (NH, Tokyo Haneda) regarding the latter's acquisition of a stake in the Filipino carrier. Instead, the two carriers will now pursue a codeshare agreement, PAL president Ramon S. Ang has disclosed. “Originally, what ANA wants is an investment but later on many meddled in the talks so the talks on investment were shelved,” Ang told ABS-CBN news. “We are talking [about] codesharing. We are looking at what we can do together to be able to improve our service. We hope to be able to close the deal within 30 days,” said Ang. Rumours of the talks surfaced last year when Lucio Tan alluded to plans to sell off his 51% stake in the Filipino national carrier. As of this posting, Mr Tan has yet to officially confirm his intentions to completely divest from PAL. Mr Ang went on state that plans to establish Cambodia Airlines (Phnom Penh) have been put on hold pending an improvement in Cambodia's socio-political outlook. “We are reviewing when to start and whether that project is still viable,” Mr Ang told reporters. PAL Holdings, Inc. signed a deal in April last year with the Royal Group of Companies of Cambodian tycoon, Neak Okhna Kith Meng, to set up the new carrier, in which PAL will have a 49% stake. However, on the back of incessant delays in the airline's certification, the south-east Asian nation has also been rocked by protests led by the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), which says it was cheated out of more than 2 million votes in an election last July.
