Bahamasair (UP, Nassau International) has begun operating Birmingham, AL's first international services with seasonal flights to Freeport International in the Bahamas. The route, which launched earlier this month using a B737-400 N43XA (msn 24796) wet-leased from XTRA Airways (Fort Lauderdale International), is operated by the Bahamian carrier on behalf of VacationExpress.com and will end on August 6.

The Birmingham Business Journal says local officials would also like to secure nonstop flights to Germany given the presence of Mercedes in nearby Vance.

Birmingham Int'l, which recently underwent a USD200million renovation and upgrade exercise, currently sees service from American Airlines (AA, Dallas/Fort Worth), Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson), Southwest Airlines (WN, Dallas Love Field), United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare), and US Airways (Phoenix Sky Harbor).
