AirAsia X (D7, Kuala Lumpur International) is looking to revive its Kuala Lumpur International to London route, terminated in 2012 as a result of its poor financial performance. AirAsia founder and Group CEO Tony Fernandez confirmed the move via social media last week adding that services to Hawaii were also on the cards.
"I am pleased to announce that the reopening of KL [Kuala Lumpur] London is definitely on the cards. Will be discussing with Boris Johnson next week," he said via his Twitter account. "KL London is the most wanted route for AirAsia X. And we will deliver it I am quite sure."
Prior to its cessation of services, AirAsia X had served London Stansted first and then London Gatwick.
CEO Azran Osman Rani has warned in the past that any resumption of flights to Europe would depend on the recovery of the continent's overall economy. The longhaul budget carrier would consider deferring the delivery of its fleet of ten A350-900s should the European market fail to recover by the time they are scheduled to begin arriving - in 2018/19.
Since withdrawing from the European long haul market in 2012, AirAsia has focussed on building a strong regional network with flights offered throughout Malaysia as well as to China, Southeast Asia and the Subcontinent.
AirAsia X currently operates a fleet of nineteen A330-300s and two A340-300s with orders for thirty-nine A330-300s and fifty A330neos.
