Libyan Airlines (LN, Tripoli Mitiga) resumed limited services out of Tripoli Mitiga on Thursday, November 27, a week after the airfield was bombed by the Libyan Air Force. Libya's Al Wasat news channel said Sunday that operations are largely limited to flights to Istanbul Atatürk, Turkey, and Amman Queen Alia in Jordan. Turkey's MNG Airlines (MB, Istanbul Airport) has also resumed its Libyan operations with cargo flights from its Istanbul hub to both Mitiga and Misurata.
In a statement issued to the international press last week, the deposed Libyan government, now based in the eastern town of Bayda, said the attacks had targeted the Libya Dawn, the Islamist faction which seized Tripoli following intense fighting in August this year.
"The shelling by the Libyan Air Force of the Mitiga airport is a pre-emptive strike on groups of so-called Libya Dawn fighters, which were preparing ammunition, vehicles and aircrafts to strike the country's infrastructure and facilities," the government said.
Government holds the Islamists directly responsible for the destruction of aircraft and infrastructure at Tripoli International and in surrounding residential areas.
