Pacific Flight Services (Singapore Seletar) and Airmark Aviation Singapore's primary base, Singapore Seletar, is set to undergo refurbishment later next year as part of government's plans to alleviate pressure on the city state's principal gateway, Singapore Changi.

The Singapore Straits Times newspaper says the upgrade, which will allow Seletar to handle more commercial traffic, will involve the demolition of the airport's existing passenger terminal, a relic of the British colonial era.

"With the growing demand for air travel and increased aircraft and passenger traffic at the Singapore air hub, there is a need to optimise the air hub's capacity. Smaller and slower aircraft, including turboprop aircraft will be moved from Changi Airport to Seletar Airport in due course," a spokesman said.

According to the ch-aviation route database, Malaysia's Firefly (FY, Penang) and Berjaya Air (J8, Kuala Lumpur Subang) are the only operators of turboprops to Changi which would be affected by the move. Neither of them has yet to comment on the airport's upgrade plans.

Opened in 1928 as an Royal Air Force base, Seletar is situated 19km from Changi and now operates as a general aviation airport catering mainly to training and charter flights. In addition, a number of MRO outfits belonging to Rolls-Royce, Eurocopter, Jet Aviation, Singapore Technologies Aerospace (ST Aerospace), and Pratt & Whitney have established a presence on site.
