CityJet (WX, Dublin International) has announced it will terminate its Cardiff operations with effect from Tuesday, June 29. The Irish carrier currently uses an ATR72 wet-leased from Stobart Air (Dublin International) to connect the Welsh capital with Edinburgh and Paris Orly.
Chief Commercial Officer Cathal O’Connell said the airline's decision was based on the Cardiff airport authority's move to support rival flybe. (2002) (Exeter) in its plans to operate services to Edinburgh and Paris CDG in direct competition with Cityjet.
“The fact that the other airline’s flight timings are almost identical to Cityjet’s questions what benefit Cardiff Airport management sought to achieve from this venture,” he told the Irish Times. "What we cannot accept is Cardiff Airport enticing another airline to provide a service on a bundle of routes which include two routes already operated by Cityjet.”
In response, Cardiff airport said it was "disappointed" in Cityjet's decision but added that both Edinburgh and Paris would continue to be served despite their departure.
