Liberty Helicopters has formally withdrawn its application to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for permission to operate scheduled passenger services.

A letter from the helicopter operator's lawyer addressed to the DOT was filed late last week requesting the withdrawal.

Though it filed for authorization back in March 2015, the DOT has repeatedly queried if Liberty Helicopters has the financial wherewithal to conduct its proposed scheduled operations. Given the protracted nature of the application, it was subsequently given a January 25 deadline to satisfy the DOT's request for further information.

The New York-based helicopter charter specialist said in its application that it planned to offer commuter flights between various New York City heliports and destinations such as the Mohegan Sun Casino Helipad, Montauk, the Southampton Heliport, and East Hampton Town presumably using its fleet of eleven Eurocopter AS350s.

A subsidiary of Sightseeing Tours of America, Inc., Liberty Helicopters bills itself as the largest and most experienced helicopter sightseeing and charter service in the New York City.
