Following recent announcements concerning the establishment of new units in Vietnam and China, AirAsia Group is now said to be planning to enter the Cambodian market.
The Khmer Times quotes the Cambodian Minister of Public Works and Transport, Sun Chanthol, as saying the AirAsia Cambodia (2017) (Phnom Penh) proposal is now undergoing review by the country's Council of Ministers for approval.
“The purpose of forming AirAsia Cambodia was brought up by AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes in his meeting with Prime Minister Hun Sen last week at the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on ASEAN,” Chanthol said. “Mr. Fernandes told the Prime Minister that AirAsia Cambodia, as AirAsia’s new subsidiary company, would be needed to handle an increasing number of air travelers from Malaysia to Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville."
Fernandes was not immediately available for comment.
Aside from these nascent units in Cambodia, China, and Vietnam, AirAsia currently operates AirAsia in Malaysia, AirAsia India, AirAsia Japan, Indonesia AirAsia, Philippines AirAsia, and Thai AirAsia.
For its part, Cambodia is home to a growing number of scheduled passenger airlines including Bassaka Air, Cambodia Angkor Air, Cambodia Bayon Airlines, JC International Airlines, and Sky Angkor Airlines.
