Primera Air Scandinavia (Billund) will enter the UK-Spain leisure market with the addition of four new services from Birmingham, GB and London Stansted. The flights will be launched in April and May next year.
The airline will launch daily flights from Stansted to Alicante and Malaga on April 23, according to the carrier's announcement. Services form Birmingham to Malaga and Palma de Mallorca will launch on May 14 and also be daily. The carrier has not disclosed what aircraft it will use and whether the flights will be operated by the Danish-based airline or by its Latvian subsidiary, Primera Air Nordic (Riga).
The market between the UK and Spain is dominated by LCCs. Primera Air will compete mostly with Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2 (United Kingdom) and TUI Airways.
Both airlines, members of the Icelandic-owned Primera Travel Group, use a total fleet of nine B737s, including two B737-700s and seven B737-800s. The group is due to receive the first of eight A321neos next year.
The Billund-based leisure specialist has previously announced its first trans-Atlantic routes in its network. It will launch flights from London Stansted to New York Newark on April 19, 2018. In mid-May, the airline will start offering services from Stansted to Boston and Toronto Pearson, from Birmingham to Newark and from Paris CDG to Newark. Finally from June, it will also operate from both Birmingham and Paris to Boston and Toronto. All flights will be operated with A321neos by Primera Air Scandinavia. These will be the only scheduled North American services from both Stansted and Birmingham. The airline will compete with other operators offering trans-Atlantic services on latest generation narrow-body aircraft, including Norwegian Air International, WestJet and Air Canada.
