Ryanair (FR, Dublin International) has again announced plans to order at least additional 200 B737-800s or A320 family aircraft if it can get the volume discounts it expects from the two aircraft manufacturers. It has given up its second attempt of an unfriendly takeover bid for competitor Aer Lingus (EI/Dublin) after it has failed to gain support of important Aer Lingus shareholders including the Irish government. It had previously announced similar plans for its Frankfurt Hahn base where threat made by Ryanair resulted in a proposed airport tax being dropped and airport owner Fraport entering into negotiations with the German state Rhineland-Palatinate to sell its 65% stake in the airport. Ryanair has in the meantime also offered to buy a minority stake in Frankfurt Hahn airport. It will however give up its Birmingham-Szczecin, Bournemouth-Wroclaw, Bristol-Gdansk/Katowice/Szczecin, Dusseldorf Weeze-London Gatwick, Liverpool-Budapest/Faro/Gdansk/Lodz/Paris Beauvais/Szczecin/Valencia, London Luton-Biarritz/Szczecin, Nottingham-Lodz/Poznan, Shannon-Berlin Schönefeld/Frankfurt Hahn/Gdansk/Katowice/London Luton/Newcastle and Stockholm Skavsta-Lodz routes by the end of March.
