The Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has confirmed that two more start-up carriers have applied for Air Service Licences (ASL).

Simon Allotey told JoyBusiness in an interview this week that AL!9CU and Gold Coast Airlines (Accra) are seeking to operate both domestic and regional flights. He did not specify the market segment i.e. passenger or cargo, schedule or charter, being sought.

Concerning other start-up's that have already been granted ASLs and are now progressing towards their respective AOCs, Allotey said Baby Jet Airlines (Accra), which is backed by local footballer Asamoah Gyan, was on Phase 4 of its certification drive. The start-up recently began advertising for the recruitment of cabin crews.

Air Futures Airlines (Accra) is understood to be on Phase 4 (demonstration and inspection) of its own AOC drive after it took delivery of its first known aircraft, an ex-SkyWest Airlines E120, that was ferried to Accra earlier this month for inspection. Ticket sales will likely be done through its Unity Air (Ghana) (AFD, Accra) brand.

Following the collapse of Starbow Airlines (Accra) last year, the Ghanaian market has become the sole preserve of Africa World Airlines (AW, Accra).
