Canadian Flyers International (Toronto Billy Bishop City Centre) has replaced domestic Guyanese carriers on charter flights serving the Aurora Gold Mine in the region of Mazaruni in the western part of the country, Kaieteur News has reported.
The mine, one of the world's largest, is owned and operated by Canadian company Guyana Goldfields.
The domestic charter flights serving the mine were previously operated by Air Services (Guyana), Trans Guyana Airways, and Roraima Airways. Guyana Goldfields has also been reported as generally reducing its cooperation with local companies, not only local airlines.
The nearest commercial airport serving the Aurora Gold Mine is Bartica, which currently sees no scheduled services.
The whole territory of the Cuyuni-Mazaruni Region, where the Aurora Gold Mine is located, is claimed by Venezuela, with which Guyana is involved in an ongoing territorial dispute.
