Thomas Klühr, the CEO of Swiss (LX, Zurich), has suggested that in the future there should be no double-digit fares on flights from Switzerland.

In a recent interview with SonntagsBlick, the Swiss boss spoke in support of determining a minimum price for flights.

"There should be no double-digit ticket prices in Switzerland. So no flights under CHF100 francs (USD100)," he said.

Klühr's statement will not be a surprise to many, following the success of the green parties in Switzerland's recent parliamentary election. Following the shock result, there is likely to be strong political pressure for the nation's flag carrier to improve its green credentials.

Along with promoting the development and increased use of synthetic fuels in its aircraft, Swiss has expanded its ‘Flugzug’ (‘airtrain’) rail service partnership with the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). Currently operating between Zurich and the SBB stations in Basel and Lugano, further routes are likely to be added next year. The primary focus will be on the country's main cities and most popular tourist destinations, such as Andermatt, Bern, Lucerne, Interlaken or Zermatt.

“By expanding these Flugzug services, we can provide our customers all over Switzerland with the best possible rail connections to and from our global route network," said Klühr. "And at the same time, we can offer our international guests a smoother and simpler journey to their Swiss destination.”

Although Swiss's domestic flights to Lugano, which were terminated following the collapse of operating carrier Adria Airways in September are now unlikely to return, it still offers multiple daily domestic flights between Zurich and Geneva, according to the ch-aviation schedules module.
