TUI Airways (BY, London Luton) will resume its operations to the Egyptian destination of Sharm el Sheikh from February 2020, after a more than two-year hiatus. Restrictions on flights between the airport and the United Kingdom (UK) were lifted by the UK Government on October 22.
To begin with, TUI Airways will resume operations next year from Birmingham, GB (February 19), London Gatwick (February 16) and Manchester International (February 16), followed by Bristol International (May 6) and Doncaster/Sheffield (May 3).
In the peak season, Birmingham to Sharm el Sheikh will be flown 2x weekly, Bristol and Doncaster/Sheffield will be operated weekly, while London Gatwick and Manchester will be flown 3x weekly.
Services to the Egyptian resort from the UK were stopped after 224 people died in the bombing of MetroJet (Russian Federation) flight 9268, linked to the Islamic State group.
Prior to the cessation of flights to Sharm el Sheikh, five carriers were operating to the destination from the UK, as indicated by the ch-aviation schedules module. Before services were withdrawn in October 2015, TUI Airways was the largest carrier in the market in terms of weekly frequencies, offering 32 weekly flights. British Airways and easyJet were also present on UK to Sharm el-Sheikh routes, as well as the now-defunct Thomas Cook Airlines UK and Monarch Airlines (1968).
