Air Mandalay (Yangon) and Asian Wings Airways (Yangon), two defunct Myanma carriers, have been given until the end of May to pay their outstanding debts to the state or face legal action, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications U Kyaw Myo said during a parliamentary hearing.

The Myanmar Times reported that the deputy minister said that multiple meetings, memos, and notifications had not lead to either of the airlines producing any repayment plan so far. The two carriers collectively owe the government MMK93.7 million kyats (USD65,000).

Both airlines collapsed in 2018, alongside several other local privately-owned carriers such as FMI Air, Air Bagan, and APEX Airlines.

U Kyaw Myo also revealed that until last year, Asian Wings and FMI Air owed an additional MMK18 million (USD12,500) to the government but managed to repay the debt - or a portion thereof, in case of Asian Wings - by April 2019.
