A notice announcing the appointment and address of an interim liquidator that is currently circulating with some alarm on social media is for the now-defunct Malaysian Airline System Berhad (MAS), not today’s Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB), a spokeswoman for the flag carrier has clarified to the Malaysian National News Agency.

The notice, dated February 21, refers to “creditors’ voluntary winding-up” and states that Chan Siew Mei has been appointed interim liquidator of MASkargo Sdn Bhd and gives his address in Petaling Jaya near Kuala Lumpur.

“This is the liquidation of the old company, MAS,” the spokeswoman said when asked about the paper advertisement. “MAB is a separate legal entity,” she added, stressing that it, therefore, has nothing to do with MAB.

MAB took over from MAS as the state-owned national carrier on September 1, 2015, as part of a recovery plan for the ailing airline. Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, Khazanah, managed the transition and is now, as previously reported, looking for a strategic partner for the airline.

MABkargo (Malaysia Airlines Berhad Cargo), meanwhile, is the cargo arm for Malaysia Airlines and is a subsidiary of parent company Malaysia Aviation Group, but it continues to operate as MASkargo.
