Airbus is seeking buyers for four A320-200neo and two A321-200neo aircraft initially destined for AirAsia Group which the South-East Asian low-cost carrier group will not take, Reuters has reported citing confidential internal documents.
The six A320neo Family narrowbodies will be available in June with cabins equipped to AirAsia's specifications.
AirAsia Group has thirteen A320neo and 349 A321neo aircraft outstanding on firm order from Airbus. While all of these jets are technically assigned to AirAsia (AK, Kuala Lumpur International), they would also be operating for other group units.
According to the ch-aviation fleets module, AirAsia Group currently operates a narrowbody fleet consisting of 197 A320-200s, forty-two A320neo, and four A321neo across all of its AOCs. The group also operates thirty-eight A330-300s and two A330-900s across its AirAsia X (D7, Kuala Lumpur International), Indonesia AirAsia X (IDX, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta), and Thai AirAsia X (XJ, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) units.
Neither Airbus nor AirAsia commented on the report. However, AirAsia Group said earlier this year that due to the slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it would not be increasing its fleet this year.
