The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has authorised regional carriers operating from Nairobi Wilson to handle their domestic scheduled and charter flights at privately-owned terminals. The move follows the resumption of domestic services in the East African country on July 15.
The Standard reports that AirKenya, Bluebird Aviation (Kenya), Boskovic Air Charters, EastAfrican, and Safarilink Aviation have now all started to use their own facilities for passenger check-in, security screening, and boarding. Acting managing director of the KAA, Alex Gitari, told the paper that he regarded "the resumption of domestic flights as a significant milestone in the aviation industry in Kenya which has been one of the hardest hit by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Wilson Airport is the nerve centre of domestic flights and now has 60 percent of aircraft movement at the airport."
The switch to the different carrier-run facilities is part of the authority's Covid-19 pandemic response allowing better social distancing between passengers given smaller groups are now processed individually at various locations around the domestic airport.
Other carriers operating domestic flights from Wilson include Freedom Airline Express, Jetways Airlines, Skyward Express, and Mombasa Air Safari. They have not yet announced any changes to their passenger handling procedures.
