ExpressJet Airlines (Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) will enter into court-supervised liquidation in the coming weeks after filing for US Chapter 11 and suspending all operations under its aha! (United States of America) brand as of August 23, 2022.
"A combination of conditions led us to this decision. Despite the valiant efforts of our employees to overcome challenges, and despite great support by our cities and airports - especially Reno-Tahoe and the community there, we arrived at a point where termination of operations was in the best interest of our stakeholders," Chairman and Chief Executive Subodh Karnik said.
The airline said a lack of available aircraft on the market and the "inability to swiftly establish passenger servicing infrastructure in smaller airports" had hampered its growth plans. Having suffered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ExpressJet also highlighted its failure to launch hotel bundle offers, which were supposed to be central to its business model, as well as high fuel prices and other unexpected costs as reasons for its collapse.
Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows ExpressJet's last-ever commercial flight took place on August 22, 2022, as EV7081 from Spokane International to Reno/Tahoe operated by E145 N846HK (msn 14500855). The carrier said it was "unable to assist with alternate travel arrangements" for passengers affected by its termination of operations.
ExpressJet Airlines was a "reboot" of the regional capacity provider founded in 1987 as Continental Express (Cleveland Hopkins) which subsequently merged with ASA - Atlantic Southeast Airlines (Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) in 2011. The production carrier suspended all operations in September 2020 when United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare) consolidated its E145 operations around CommutAir (Cleveland Hopkins). It then restarted in October 2021 as a regional scheduled carrier, flying independently out of Reno/Tahoe under the aha! brand. The airline operated four E145s at the time of its collapse.
United Airlines Holdings used to have a 49.9% stake in ExpressJet Airlines but sold it in June 2022.
