SpiceJet (SG, Delhi International) is still doing the maths as it considers whether or not to enter the long-haul market with widebody aircraft. Speaking with Aviation Daily, Chief Financial Officer Kiran Koteshwar said that the low-cost carrier was "working on the economics".
In January of this year, The Times of India reported that SpiceJet had optioned B787s as part of its latest order with Boeing (BOE, Washington National) for 100 B737 MAXs.
Back then, SpiceJet Chairman Ajay Singh thought the market looked promising. "We are evaluating the low cost long haul model for which an optional order for wide body planes has been placed. There is a good market for this segment in India if a good product is offered at the right price. Imagine the demand that a fare of INR10,000 - 15,000 (USD155 – 232) on Delhi-London will have," he said at the time.
Should SpiceJet exercise the B787 option, they would be the first widebody aircraft in the SpiceJet fleet which currently comprises twenty-six B737-800s, four B737-900(ER)s, two B737-700s and seventeen Dash 8-400s.
According to Aviation Daily's report, if SpiceJet goes the longhaul path, it would look to Eastern European and Turkish destinations, rather than Western Europe.
Internationally, SpiceJet currently serves its neighbours at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Colombo International, Dhaka, Dubai International, Kabul, Malé, and Muscat.
