The Italian civil aviation authority (l'Ente Nazionale per l'Aviazione Civile - ENAC) has confirmed it has lifted restrictions on the validity of the Air Operator's Certificates (AOC) for both Alitalia (AZA, Rome Fiumicino) and its Alitalia CityLiner (CYL, Rome Fiumicino) unit.
ENAC placed the two carriers on temporary six-month licenses following their entry into bankruptcy in May this year.
However, given recent measures imposed by the airlines' three appointed administrators, ENAC said in a statement on August 10 that it was restoring their permanent operating licences effective immediately.
"The Commissioners have committed themselves to ensuring the continuation of regular business activities in line with the purposes of the Extraordinary Administration Procedure," it said. "ENAC will continue to carry out its corporate statutory auditing activities in accordance with current European legislation."
Alitalia was forced to file for bankruptcy after its labour force voted to reject a cost-cutting plan in April this year. Shareholders, including Etihad Airways (EY, Abu Dhabi International), subsequently withheld a EUR2 billion capital injection.
