Libyan Air Cargo (Tripoli International) has lost An-124 5A-DKN (msn 19530502792) after the parked freighter was destroyed during heavy fighting at Tripoli International Airport between jihadist factions loyal to the internationally-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA), and the General Khalifa Haftar-led Libyan National Army (LNA) on Saturday, June 22.
According to local media reports, the Antonov Design Bureau quadjet was hit by either a rocket-propelled grenade or by heavy mortar after GNA forces suspected it of having been used to ferry in ammunition to the LNA. The aircraft had been parked at the airfield since 2014.
Photos on social media indicate the hull was a total write-off with only its tail section having survived the ensuing fire.
A subsidiary of Libyan Arab Airlines (Tripoli International), Libyan Air Cargo had also operated Il-76 freighters although their fate is currently unknown.
