United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare) has announced it will suspend seven long-haul routes during June 2022 due to the continued grounding of its Pratt & Whitney PW4000-powered B777s.
The following sectors are affected:
- from New York Newark to Kahului, Honolulu, and Tokyo Narita, and
- from Washington Dulles to São Paulo Guarulhos, Geneva, Honolulu, and Dublin International.
All seven routes are scheduled to resume in July 2022. However, United Airlines will also terminate services from Newark to Stockholm Arlanda.
The carrier's nineteen PW4000-powered B777-200s and thirty-three B777-200ERs have remained grounded since a February 2021 uncontained engine failure on one of them. In April, the carrier hoped to start reactivating the jets in mid-May 2022. United Airlines remained adamant in the wake of the incident that the aircraft would return to service once cleared by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The ch-aviation fleets module shows that United's B777 fleet also comprises twenty-two B777-200(ER)s and twenty-two B777-300(ER)s powered by General Electric GE90 engines, which are not affected by the grounding.
