American Airlines (AA, Dallas/Fort Worth) and subsidiary Executive Airlines (Puerto Rico) (San Juan Luis Muñoz Marin) are now expected to completely close down their hub operation at San Juan Luis Muñoz Marin by April 1, 2013. The two carriers will lay off all non-union employees and offer them options to transfer to other bases and airports. All remaining twelve ATR 72-200s in the Executive fleet will be retired and routes from San Juan to Antigua, Basseterre, Tortola, Dominica Melville Hall, Fort de France, Pointe à Pitre, Punta Cana, Santiago de los Caballeros, Santo Domingo Las Américas, St. Croix Henry E. Rohlsen and St. Thomas Cyril E. King cut leaving American with just 15 daily departures from the airport. American plans to continue to serve Caracas Simón Bolivar, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami International and New York JFK. As a further blow to Puerto Rico, British Airways (BA, London Heathrow) has also announced that it does not plan to continue its weekly service from London Gatwick via Antigua to San Juan from the end of March next year.
