LAN Cargo (Santiago de Chile) has been fined CAD975'000(USD938'000) by the Canadian Competition Bureau after it admitted to taking part in an air cargo price-fixing cartel. The Chilean cargo airline's guilty plea related to fuel surcharges it imposed on international air cargo shipments from Canada to South America and elsewhere between March 2003 and February 2006, the bureau said in a statement. Thus far, the airline is the ninth to be convicted as part of a Canadian investigation into cargo price-fixing that has resulted in fines exceeding CAD25million being issued to Cathay Pacific (CX, Hong Kong International), British Airways (BA, London Heathrow), Air France (AF, Paris CDG), KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL, Amsterdam Schiphol), Cargolux (CV, Luxembourg), Martinair (Netherlands) (MP, Amsterdam Schiphol), Qantas (QF, Sydney Kingsford Smith) and Korean Air (KE, Seoul Incheon). The watchdog said investigations into the alleged conduct of other air cargo carriers would meanwhile continue.
