Air North (4N, Whitehorse International) has lost a contract to ferry as many as 19'000 people between Dawson City and Fairbanks International after the U.S. Customs & Border Protection (USCBP) said it could not provide the requisite staff needed to process the passengers. Canadian Aviation News says Air North would have operated nine weekly flights on behalf of Holland America, the organizing agency, which would otherwise have relied on buses. However, the USCBP said it would be “an inefficient use of their existing resources” to relocate workers to Fairbanks to support the flights. “Ultimately, the impact on CBP’s existing operations proves too significant to support the request as outlined.” In its response, Air North said it would file an appeal against the decision. Alaskan Senator, Lisa Murkowski (R), said she now had “grave concerns” over the staffing levels at Fairbanks International Airport.
