Air Mekong (Ho Chi Minh City) has had its operating licence revoked by the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport after it failed to submit any plans regarding its resumption of operations.
The Thanh Nien News site says that while the airline, which ceased operations in 2011, submitted restructuring and financial reports to the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (Cục Hàng không Dân dụng Việt Nam - CAAV) in March last year, it thereafter did not articulate any further plans to resume services. Under Vietnamese law, aviation-related businesses can lose their operating licenses if they are inactive for 12 or more months.
The CAAV says that the decision to revoke Air Mekong's operators licence came after repeat attempts at contacting the airline's management failed.
Established in 2009, Air Mekong had plied an exclusively domestic Vietnamese route network using a fleet of four CRJ-900s leased from SkyWest Airlines (OO, St. George Municipal). However, following heavy losses attributed, in part, to the CRJ's high operating costs, the carrier ceased operations in March 2011.
