Argentina's Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie has confirmed that five carriers have submitted proposals for weekly flights between the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas and the South American mainland. Once a month, the service will stopover in Argentina.
According to Reuters, Faurie told a press conference to mark British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson's visit to Buenos Aires last week that of the five, two of the applicants are from Chile, two from Brazil, and one from Uruguay. He did not specify their names.
A decision is expected to be made later in the year in time for the new route to launch by the end of the year.
LATAM Airlines (LA, Santiago de Chile) operates the only flights between the Falklands and the South American mainland. It currently operates a weekly Mount Pleasant International-Punta Arenas International, Chile service which, once a month, stops over in Rio Gallegos, Argentina.
